Fatwa Shopping

This post is still about religion; about Islam. Before, I wrote in Bahasa Indonesia and this time I'll write in English. The contents are not the same though.

Yesterday, I experienced to meet a professor from a university in Sidney. We were in informal meeting and we shared a bit of this and that. 

The main topic was about Islam and Islamic economics. Then at a time, we talked about fatwa shopping. What is fatwa shopping? You know when you disagree with a fatwa of an ulama because it doesn't benefit you, then you ask another ulama until you find a right fatwa that suits your preference best. You just take the fatwa that benefits you. Otherwise, you come to another ulama again. It's called fatwa shopping. 

It is indeed that Islam is easy. However, when you choose a certain imaam, means that you have to follow all of His fatwas. You cannot choose fatwa about A from ulama B while for fatwa about B you choose fatwa from ulama A. It's called inconsistency unless for adh-dharurat while it's another story.

However, it becomes trend nowadays, and not only here in Indonesia but also everywhere.  You don't be kaffah in this way. Wallahua'lam.
